Version Release info Officially(?) licensed from 3rd Eye Records, (with edged catalogue number EYE 001). Only the catalogue number etched in the run out groove appears as EYE 01 on the Entity release! Maybe they made the mistake or did this on purpose by spelling System Ex instead of Photek's aka System X. This is perhaps the most dancefloor orientated of all Photek's releases when he was at the peak of his production powers. 'Say it' will be instantly recognisable to many Old Skool heads as it was caned by the likes of Grooverider and Bukem for years afterwards, and in a variety of mixes. There are at least three other mixes of 'Say it', one of which (the best in our opinion) combines 'Say it Version' with elements of 'Mind Games (Dub Mix)'. This is available on the Peshay mix from Dreamscape 24 (1997). You get 4 tunes; two mellow rollers and two absolutely tearing Amen smashers. One of Photek's harder amen workout but still musical with it's diva like vocals; "Feel It", futuristic sci-fi sound fx and dark haunting strings gives this a dark and melancholic touch. A2. Untitled Release info Part three of a three 10" ultra rare Street Beats release by Rupert Parkes (aka Photek), under the 'Truper' alias. Truper is an anagram of Rupert..This is the last part and probably the darkest so far. The A-side intro starts with militant light breaks, smooth bongo percussion, deep building dark atmospheres wich ends in a small break that created loads of tension so far untill it's scary "Hello Is anyone here" female vocal sample (probably taken from some horror / sci-fi movie) unleashes the largest of Amen drops so far shown by mr Rupert. It is this HUGE amen workout accompanied with deep technoid soundfx that moves the headz and feet on any dancefloor, this is the next chapter in Amen beats programming wich probably did not take that much time considering Photek's craftmanship from his experience on early System X productions on the 3rd Eye label. The B side is much lighter with it's warm but industrial Detroit Techno sounds (probably inspired by from Detroit's finest producer Juan Atkin/ Model 500) Warm space synth pads accompanied with deep minimal sub layers and razor sharp beats wich takes you on a deep journey into space oddyssee! In our (humble) opinion defenately one of Rupert's best production, just timeless music that has put Photek firmly on the A list of DNB producers, even today he can be considered as one of DNB pioneers along Grooverider, Fabio, Goldie, Doc Scott. Hydrolicks Release info X Resistance starts off in fairly standard darkside style with plenty of atmosphere and a digeridoo-like backing noise, but when the break comes in you go "what the.." as this bizarre spaced out break twists itself and you completely lose the beat before catching it again. It sound a lot slower than it's 165ish bpm due to the fact it doesn't use the traditional bass/snare patterns, and it took me a lot of concentration to identify that the bar structure is actually 16 beats long, because the up and down beats are flipped for part of that. Partway through it reverts to a more conventional break before continuing as before. Difficult and clever. Y Hydrolicks on the flip is a much more conventional piece of dark/techstep. Fly With Me (1:56) Release info: Our particular favourite track on this LP is On The Double but Time & Space is also a very nice deep intelligent track, where as Rivers Of Congo with it's sharp bongo percussion are one of Groove's best tracks ever. The magnum opus of Grooverider and a giddy high point for Drum & Bass music showcasing the Seventies Afrofunk sound that Grooverider was so heavily influenced by. As the title suggests, a live double bass is plucked throughout in perfect percussive harmony with the warm muted drums, unhurried in tempo and providing a perfect lazy bed for the subdued brass and wind instruments interspersing throughout. The midway cadence, laced with subtle drum rolls, is deftly superseded by a new permutation of the double bass rhythm which rolls all the way to the end. Co-Produced by Optical who seems to have really picked up on Grooverider’s vibe. Using his expertise in such masterful compression of the drums, the listener, on a good system, could almost be in the same room as the drummer and double bass player.
