Presha III $Studio Pressure aka Photek \| Relics \| Certificate 18 \| 12\"$ Release info The Studio Pressure aka Photek classic on Certificate 18. Relics could easily be renamed as The Moodswing Tune because of it's different musical phases; starting mellow with a hypnotising looping Bell intro, smoothly adding some hi-fi woodblocks, techno hi-hats and strings and not forgetting very simple, but oh so, effective warm bass stabs untill dropping in some smoothly chopped Amen beats. By only adding a deep jazzy saxophone(sample?)in the short break and some additional light beats and changing the patterns of course it makes this track as mesmerising and seductive as it can be with Intelligent Drum and Bass. It seems Rupert did not put much effort in this track (at least it sounds like that in a good way)! With his minimal approach of editing studio crafted sounds and getting the job done on different layering of the bass and getting the drum patterns just perfect he created a luscious and hypnotising atmosphere throughout this original track. I wondered how many times Bukem & Fabio played this track in clubs around the globe, i even heard it on some Bukem studio mixtape so grab a piece of history as this timeless piece of art is also suitable for homelistening and also recommended for every electronic music fan! That's why Plaid of Warp fame and Digital of Timeless Records got the hard job to make the remixes wich sounds nice but it's this track that created a whole new type of genre and could be considered as groundbreaking, it's just a classic piece of music made by Rupert Parkes aka Photek and released by Paul Arnold (Cert18). This is perhaps the most dancefloor orientated of all Photek's releases when he was at the peak of his production powers. 'Say it' will be instantly recognisable to many Old Skool heads as it was caned by the likes of Grooverider and Bukem for years afterwards, and in a variety of mixes. There are at least three other mixes of 'Say it', one of which (the best in our opinion) combines 'Say it Version' with elements of 'Mind Games (Dub Mix)'. This is available on the Peshay mix from Dreamscape 24 (1997). You get 4 tunes; two mellow rollers and two absolutely tearing Amen smashers. Untitled $The Truper aka Photek \| Street Beats vol.3 \| Street Beats \| 10\"$ Release info Part three of a three 10" ultra rare Street Beats release by Rupert Parkes (aka Photek), under the 'Truper' alias. Truper is an anagram of Rupert..This is the last part and probably the darkest so far. The A-side intro starts with militant light breaks, smooth bongo percussion, deep building dark atmospheres wich ends in a small break that created loads of tension so far untill it's scary "Hello Is anyone here" female vocal sample (probably taken from some horror / sci-fi movie) unleashes the largest of Amen drops so far shown by mr Rupert. It is this HUGE amen workout accompanied with deep technoid soundfx that moves the headz and feet on any dancefloor, this is the next chapter in Amen beats programming wich probably did not take that much time considering Photek's craftmanship from his experience on early System X productions on the 3rd Eye label. The B side is much lighter with it's warm but industrial Detroit Techno sounds (probably inspired by from Detroit's finest producer Juan Atkin/ Model 500) Warm space synth pads accompanied with deep minimal sub layers and razor sharp beats wich takes you on a deep journey into space oddyssee! In our (humble) opinion defenately one of Rupert's best production, just timeless music that has put Photek firmly on the A list of DNB producers, even today he can be considered as one of DNB pioneers along Grooverider, Fabio, Goldie, Doc Scott. Part two is the subject of many an ongoing record hunt, that untitled track with the flute, on one side of this record was spun by Coldcut on their epic "Journeys By DJs" set, and has now achieved legendary cult status for being hard to find, and hard to know what to call it, this is probably Photeks best deep amen record ever made on the Street Beats label. Not to forget the B-Side though which is just as mind bendingly good, or indeed the rest of this set of three Trupers on Street Beats. Truper is an anagram of Rupert..Part one is the deepest, most intelligent and thought-out pieces of Drum n bass/breakbeat/Jungle tracks we have ever heard from mr. Photek. Nice kicks with delays to begin with, woven into a quite mysterious sounding sample that evokes a lots of moods and then the drums drop in with an 'ah oh oow' female voice and then the snares shivers with a melodic b line that creates a buzz! The track fades into a world of undersea samples with futuristic fx bleeps in the background. The snares return and the track takes another deep tangent into your mind. Pure bliss! The same can almost be said for B side - again a well thought out piece that twists and turns and retains the complexity and ballerina-type dexterity as on the A side.
